Men and Women
Viking Disc Brooches.
Home
Most Vikings were farmers or lived with farmers, growing and making all the things they needed in their daily life. They used iron tools, such as sickles and hoes. Using those tools, they grew oats, barley and wheat, and ground the grain to make flour, porridge and ale. Vikings also grew vegetables such as onions, beans and cabbages. They had farm animals such as pigs, sheep, goats, cattle, geese and chickens. The Vikings used manure from the animals to keep the soil fertile. In autumn, unfortunately they killed some animals because there wasn't enough food to feed them all through winter. Women worked on the farm and made material for clothes and blankets. When their husbands were away fishing they took care of the whole farm. The houses they lived in were normally made of timber planks and woven branches. In Iceland and Shetland they would use stone in places where they had no wood. Normally there would be a farm, family house, sheds for animals, a workshop for making metal tools and small huts for slaves for an entire family.
Clothes
Most clothes were made from woollen cloth, althought some rich people wore imported silk or linen. In Winter the Vikings wore fur to keep them warm. Men wore an undershirt and breeches (badges), covered by long woollen trousers and a tunic which reached to the knees. All of this was held up with a leather belt, not only that, but a purse and knife were also carried on the belt. Women wore long wool or linen dresses with a wollen tunic rather like an apron attached with brooches (badges), hanging from their belts they carried a knife and keys.
